OCT parameters of the optic nerve head and the retina as surrogate markers of brain volume in a normal population, a pilot study

The relationship between optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements of the retinal structures has been described for various neurological diseases including Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's (PD). Brain volume changes, both globally by area, are associated with some these same diseases, yet correlation OCT is not fully elucidated.Our study looked at normal subjects, brain volumes, specific regions pericalcarine grey matter, entorhinal cerebellar using a retrospective, cross-sectional cohort design.Thickness nerve fiber layer (RNFL) as measured OCT, correlated when adjusted age gender. Similarly, thickness ganglion cell layer-inner plexiform complex may be matter volumes total although our pilot did reach statistical significance. This suggests that eye follow similar trajectory understanding inter-relationship will aid in analysis changes seen disease. Further studies needed to longitudinally demonstrate relationships.
